SUNDAY REFLECTION

 

Difficult moments do not only test those who are going through them; they also test our values, our friendships, and our humanity.

Regardless of the circumstances currently surrounding Brian A. DePeña , we cannot forget that behind every public situation there is a human being, a family, and people who are also going through difficult times.

As a community leader, I understand that my responsibility is to advocate for our community first and to remain steadfast in the pursuit of truth, transparency, and accountability. But I also believe this must always be done with respect for human dignity and due process.

Being empathetic does not mean justifying or minimizing anything. Nor does it mean rushing to determine guilt or innocence. We can demand answers while still treating people with humanity.

It is precisely during times of adversity that we discover the true meaning of friendship and leadership. A true friend is not only someone who is there to celebrate our victories, but also someone who stands with us during difficult times, speaks to us honestly, and knows how to correct us when we are wrong.

We can ask that the law take its course, defend the interests of Lawrence, and at the same time show consideration for Brian and his family.

My commitment will remain with my community, with the facts, with the truth, and with due process.

And from a place of humanity and faith, my prayers are with all the families who may be going through difficult times today.

Because we can stand firm without losing our humanity. We can demand justice without losing empathy. And we can have differences without losing our respect for one another’s dignity.

Sunday Reflection

Los momentos difíciles no solo ponen a prueba a quienes los atraviesan; también ponen a prueba nuestros valores, nuestras amistades y nuestra humanidad.

Independientemente de las circunstancias que rodean actualmente a Brian A. DePeña, no podemos olvidar que detrás de cada situación pública hay un ser humano, una familia y personas que también están pasando por momentos difíciles.

Como líder comunitaria, entiendo que mi responsabilidad es abogar primero por nuestra comunidad y mantenerme firme en la búsqueda de la verdad, la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas. Pero también creo que esto siempre debe hacerse con respeto a la dignidad humana y al debido proceso.

Ser empática no significa justificar o minimizar nada. Tampoco significa apresurarse a determinar la culpabilidad o la inocencia. Podemos exigir respuestas y aun así tratar a las personas con humanidad.

Es precisamente en los tiempos de adversidad cuando descubrimos el verdadero significado de la amistad y el liderazgo. Un amigo de verdad no es solo alguien que está ahí para celebrar nuestras victorias, sino también alguien que nos acompaña en los momentos difíciles, nos habla con honestidad y sabe corregirnos cuando nos equivocamos.

Podemos pedir que la ley siga su curso, defender los intereses de Lawrence y, al mismo tiempo, mostrar consideración hacia Brian y su familia.

Mi compromiso seguirá estando con mi comunidad, con los hechos, con la verdad y con el debido proceso.

Y desde un lugar de humanidad y fe, mis oraciones están con todas las familias que hoy puedan estar pasando por momentos difíciles.

Porque podemos mantenernos firmes sin perder nuestra humanidad. Podemos exigir justicia sin perder la empatía. Y podemos tener diferencias sin perder el respeto por la dignidad de los demás.
